Baja Mexico tourists no longer need a temporary import permit for their vehicles. Tourists may travel the entire Baja peninsula, all the way to La Paz and Cabo San Lucas and back. But have a fender bender in Loreto without Mexico liability insurance, and you'll spend your holiday in jail.
Should you be determined to be at fault, bear in mind that Mexican courts, at their discretion, will require you to cover any medical expenses and property damage to third parties, as well as cover the livelihood of family members of those parties unable to work while injured, and possibly other expenses, at their discretion.
Get a Mexican insurance policy and enjoy your holiday catching a fish in Cabo San Lucas or kayaking out of San Felipe, Bahía de Los Angeles, or La Paz. Whatever you drive, wherever you drive in Mexico, you need Mexican insurance. It's required by Mexican law for all drivers.
You'll be happy to have quality car insurance!
My Car Insurance is Supposed to Cover Me in Mexico
Some US and Canadian policies may cover your collision damage on short trips into Mexico, as in 25 miles from the border. But third party liability coverage stops at the international border. US and Canadian policies are not accepted by Mexican authorities and courts as proof of financial responsibility for your liability in the event of a collision in Mexico. Whether you were at fault or not, you could be incarcerated for failure to show proof of financial responsibility.

Driving in Mainland Mexico?
If you will be driving only in the Mexican state of Sonora, to Rocky Point, for instance, there is
a special Sonora-only
temporary import permit just for you. If you travel further into Mexico,
you need the standard temporary import permit. Just as drivers visiting Baja need Mexican insurance, all mainland Mexico drivers
need Mexican third party liability insurance, whether visiting Mexico as a tourist, or driving in Mexico as a resident.
Temporary Import Permit
You need a temporary import permit for your vehicle if you will drive beyond Mexican border zones, apart from Baja California. The best source for official news on the import permit requirement is the Mexican consulate. The US State Department website has some information on this permit and tips on travel in Mexico.
Temporary Import Permit Online
Through Banjercito, you can now obtain temporary import permits online for boats, cars, and RVs. You can apply for your permit up to 60 days in advance of travel and have it delivered overnight. Apply online at least ten days before your planned departure.
Tourist Cards and Visas
Travel in Mexico requires you to obtain the appropriate Mexican immigration document for your needs. Don't forget your passport!
