Types of Boat Insurance

Some people use boat and yacht indifferently to describe a recreational vessel as opposed to a ship. When distinguishing between boat and yacht, we use boats to describe vessels up to 26 feet L.O.A. and yachts to describe vessels 27 feet L.O.A. and longer. Otherwise, we often use boats in a generic sense in reference to vessels which are not ships.

While the specialty of writing insurance for recreational vessels is properly called providing yacht insurance, most people look for boat insurance. We offer several types of boat insurance, shown at right.

Hull Insurance

If you need boat or yacht insurance, we offer hull insurance for vessels registered outside of Mexico through our US affiliate, Mariners General Insurance Group. In Mexico, we offer hull insurance for Mexico–registered vessels; these policies are underwritten by AXA Seguros.

Boat Liability Insurance

Mexico requires boats to have Mexico boat liability insurance coverage, just as it requires for cars. We provide this coverage through ACE Seguros. For vessels with yacht insurance written outside of Mexico, this Mexico boat liability coverage picks up in Mexican waters as your domestic liability insurance drops. Mexican authorities and courts accept liability coverage from only Mexican insurers as proof of civil financial responsibility in Mexico.

Marine Insurance

Marine insurance includes not only this specialty of covering recreational vessels. It also includes coverage of ships and their cargo, as well as shoreside infrastructure related to transportation or storage of cargo. We do not offer these types of coverage. However, for recreational boaters who ship their vessels over land, we do offer a type of marine cargo insurance, for overland trucking risk.
